TAMBOPATA RESERVE 8 DAYS

 


We will spend several days at the Explorers Inn, one of the best places for birding in Peru, in this lodge have been more species than any other lodge in the reserve, we will explore various habitats and we make a trip to the Chuncho Macaw Clay-lick to see parrots and macaws eating clay.

Day 1 .- PUERTO MALDONADO - EXPLORERS INN
Flight departure from Cusco or Lima to Puerto Maldonado, then we continue our trip by road to the small town called Infierno, in this place we board our motor boat. On the route we can go make some stops for birding as Bat Falcon, Piratic Flycatcher, Purus Jacamar, Roadside Hawk, Gray-necked Wood-Rail, Russet-backed Oropendola, lineata Woodpecker, and some flycatchers. In the river banks we can see birds like Pied Lapwing, Collared Plover, King Vulture, Black Caracara, after 3 hours in the river, we will stop at the Tambopata Reserve control office and then we moved into the Explorers Inn Lodge, one of the best places for birding in the Peruvian Amazon, where we will spend the next days, we have time to see birds in the gardens and we'll do some hiking in the afternoon.


Day 2.-COCOCOCHA LAKE.
We started the day very early, after breakfast we head to Cococha Lake, the route is long, but we will have great opportunities to birding in the forest, you can find White-browed Ant-bird, Pied Puffbird, White Puffbird-necked, Curl-crested Aracary, Undulated Antshrike, Spix Guan, Screaming Piha, pavonina Quetzal, White-tailed Trogon, Broad-billed Motmot, White-throated Toucan and many others. At the lake we will board rowboats, in this place the bird species change and appearing species like Hoatzin, these are large and primitive birds; they feed leaves and make a kind of digestion through fermentation, like ruminants. There are chances of seeing Agamy Heron, Sungrebe, Sunbittern, Ringed Kingfisher, Anhinga, Great Ani, Amazon Kingfisher, Red-capped Cardinal, Crane Hawk, and many more, we return to the lodge for lunch.
In the afternoon you can see birds in the garden and the nearby trails such as Black-tailed Trogon, Yellow-rumped Cacique, Spix Guan, Fork-tailed Woodnymph, Festive Coquete, and Chestnut Woodpecker.
Day 3.-EXPLORERS INN – CHUNCHO CLAY-LICK.
After breakfast we depart upriver by boat. The river trip takes several hours and you can see birds in the riparian environment such as, Yellow-billed Tern, Pied Lapwing, Capped Heron, Heron Cocoi, Large-billed Tern, Orinoco Goose, Great-Black Hawk. When we are near the area at the Clay-lick, set up our camp to attend the show of macaws at dawn the next day. Then we'll do a hike in the forest, this is a good area to look for Razor-billed Curasow, Great Tianmou, Blue-throated Piping-guan, Rock Perekeet, Plain winged Antshrike, Bluish Slate Antshrike, White eyed Antwren, then we visit a patch of Guadua Bamboo we have chances to see White- cheeked Tody Tyrant, Peruvian Recurvebill, Red-billed Scythebill, Rufous-headed Woodpecker, Dusky-tailed Flatbill, White-lined Antbird and many more, we return to our camp for the night.
Day 4.-CHUNCHO CLAY-LICK - EXPLORERS INN.
We get up very early to cross the river before dawn, looking for a good location in front of the Clay-lick where to wait for the birds. Sometimes we have to wait 3 or 4 hours before they feel safe and go down (hundreds and even thousands) to eat the clay, we can see Scarlet Macaw, Blue and Yellow Macaw, Red and Green Macaw, Chestnut-fronted Macaw, Orange-cheeked Parrot, Blue-headed Parrot, among the smaller species are Dusky-headed Perekeet, Tui Parakeet White-eyed Perekeet, Cobalt-winged Perekket, Dusky-billed Parrotlets and many other species, Sometimes there are raptors like Ornate Hawk-eagle or Orange-breasted Falcon in search of easy prey.
After spending some hours at the Clay-lick, back to Explorers Inn. In the afternoon, we go into the forest using the trails that lead to a terra firme habitat. In this area, look for Pale-winged Trompeter and we try to see a mixed flock of Antbirds. At these concentrations can meet between 10 and 30 Antbirds, Antwrens and Antshrike, including some Woodcreepers and sometimes the elusive Red-crowned Ant-tanager. Overnight at Explorers Inn

 

Day 5 and 6.-EXPLORERS INN.
We walk in the trails of Explorers Inn for two days so we can see many amazon birds, and some really rare and hard to find. The strategy is to visit different ecosystems to observe as many species as possible, include Blackish Antbird, Chestnut-tailed Antbird, Ringed Antpipit, Ornate Antwren, Wedge-billed Woodcreeper, Great Jacamar and Bluish-fronted Jacamar. At dawn we visit the collpita, a small parrot clay lick very close to the lodge where rare species sometimes occur, we will also explore a small flooded area, where you can see Rufous-side Crake, Gray-breasted Crake, Black-tailed Tityra, Red-necked Woodpecker, Bare-necked Spangled Cotinga Fruitcrow and, among others.

Day 7. EXPLORERS INN - PUERTO MALDONADO.
Early in the morning we will make the last walk on the trails of the lodge, after breakfast, we return to Puerto Maldonado where we leave the luggage in our hotel. After lunch we will go birding around the city. Most of this environment consists of secondary forest, farmland, pastures and other deforested areas, these habitats are good places to many interesting species, which may not yet have seen. as Giant Cowbird, Troupial, Gray-breasted Martin, Pearl Kite, Barred Antshrike, Short-tailed Pygmy Tyrant, Boat-billed Flycatcher, Gray-fronted Dove, Ruddy Ground Dove, Bat Falcon, King Vulture, Pale-legged Hornero, Bluish-fronted Jacamar, Chestnut-bellied Seedeater, Pale-rumped Swift, Short-tailed Swift, Depending on the season we can see migratory birds such as Black-and-white Seedeater, Lesson's Seedeater, Fork-tailed Flycatcher, Creamy-bellied Trush and Crowned Slaty-Flycatcher. If we have time also visit the river banks and forest edges. Overnight in a comfortable hotel in the city.


Day 8.- PUERTO MALDONADO-CUSCO OR LIMA.
We will have a time in the morning for birding and then transfer to the airport for your flight to Cusco or Lima.
