MANÚ NATIONAL PARK AND MACHUPICCHU 10 DAYS

 

Day 1.- CUSCO – HUACARPAY LAGOON.
Reception on arrival at the airport in Cusco. Private car, we will spend the afternoon visiting Huacarpay Lagoon , a high Andean wetland (3170 mts. high) where we will look for Andean Gull , Andean Coot, White-tufted Grebe, Many-colored Rush-tyrant, Wren-like Rushbird, Yellow-winged Blackbird, Greater Yellowlegs, Lesser Yellowlegs, Black-tailed Trainbearer, Sparkling Violetear, Plumbeous Rail and Puna Teal. Around the lagoon grows a plant of the family of snuff, which attracts many hummingbirds and especially the Bearded Mountaineer and Giant Hummingbird.
Return to Cusco for the night.


DAY 2 AND 3.- CUSCO - MACHUPICCHU.
Early departure to take the train to Machu Picchu. Upon arrival we will do ornithological walks in the vicinity of Aguas Calientes where you can see Green-and-white Hummingbird, Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Masked Trogon, Ocellated Piculet, White-eared Solitary, Silver-backed Tanager, Highland Elaenia, Torrent Duck, White-capped Dipper, Barred Fruiteater, etc… Later we will go by bus to the ruins of Machu Picchu to visit one of the major world wonders. We will tour for two hours and still have some free time to explore. In this area you can see the Inca Wren, an endemic bird of the province of Cusco. At dusk we take the bus back to Aguas Calientes where we will sleep in a hostel.
The next day birding in the vicinity of the town, road and railway line which are excellent places to observe birds such as (apart from those already mentioned) Mitred Parakeet, Hightland Motmot, Fasciated Tiger-heron, Golden-crowned Flycatcher, Sierran Elaenia, etc...
At noon we will take the train back to Cusco where we will sleep.


DAY 4.- CUSCO – COCK OF THE ROCK LODGE.
Early morning departure by private car. En route to the village of Paucartambo you can see the Andean Flycker, Green-tailed Trainbearer, Spot-winged Pigeon and many more. At noon we will reach the gates of Acjanaco (3300mts. high), from where we start the descent to the lowlands of Manu. We will dedicate the afternoon to follow the road and stopping to observe the birds that are stratified along the descent; Andean Pygmy-owl, White-collared Jay, Grass-green Tanager, Golden-collared Tanager, Hooded Mountain-tanager, Scarlet-bellied Mountain-tanager, Masked Flowerpiercer, Grey-breasted Mountain-toucan, Puna Thistletail, and several species of hummingbirds.
Overnight at the Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge.
DAY 5.- COCK OF THE ROCK LODGE.-
From early morning we dedicate ourselves to observe mid-altitude montane species such as, Blue-banded Toucanet, Olive-backed Woodcreeper, Montane Woodcreeper, Spotted Barbtail, Montane Foliage-gleaner, Crested Quetzal, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Uniform Antshrike, Variable Antshrike, Paradise Tanager, Golden Tanager, Dusky-green Oropendola and Versicolored Barbet, to mention just a few.
In this area you can also see two species of primates and other mammals such as squirrels and Tayra. In the gardens of the Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge can see and photograph a variety of hummingbirds as Green-fronted Lancebill, Wedge-Billed Hummingbird, Violet-Fronted Brilliant, Booted Racket-tail, and Wire-Crested Thorntail, among others. In the afternoon we will go to the lek of the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock to watch the males during their mating dance.
Overnight and meals at the Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge.

DAY 6.-COCK OF THE ROCK LODGE - AMAZONIA LODGE.
Very early we continue the decline in vehicle. In this path we can see species of lowlands and secondary forest as Blue-Headed Macaw, Swallow Tanager, Turquoise Tanager, Green-and-gold Tanager, Blue-crowned Trogo, Bat Falcon, Yellow-shouldered Grosbeak, Golden-collared Honeycreeeper, Speckled Chachalaca, Barred Forest-falcon, White-rumped Haw and Black Solitary Eagle
Night in Amazonia Lodge.

DAY 7.-AMAZONIA LODGE-PANTIACOLLA LODGE.
In the morning we will cross the Alto Madre de Dios River to visit the small Cocha Machuwasi, a bend in the river long abandoned and is now a lagoon which is accessed by a path that we will travel looking for birds such as the Manu Antbird, Buckley’s Forest-falcon, Wattled Guan, Pheasant Cuckoo, Koepcke’s Hermit, Ferruginous Pygmy-owl and Yellow-browed Tody-flycatcher.
Once we get to the lake, we will get on a pole driven raft from which we can look closely at the strange Hoatzin (Hoazín), akin to the ancient bird Archaeopteryx. This species makes a digestion similar to ruminants, flies only short stretches and their chicks have claws on the wings with which they can climb the branches. Other species typical of this habitat; Striated Heron, Cocoi Heron, Rufescent-tiger Heron, Sungrebe, Red-capped Cardinal, Horned Scream, Watled Jacana and many more. After lunch (box lunch) we will climb into the boat and descend the river bound for Pantiacolla Lodge. Along this river path we can see birds such as Collared Plover, Fasciated Tiger-heron, Military Macaw, Large-billed Tern and Yellow-billed Tern, among others. We will arrive to Pantiacolla Lodge where we may still have time to make an initial tour of the trails.
Dinner and overnight at Pantiacolla Lodge.


DAY 8.- PANTIACOLLA LODGE.
During the day, we will do various walks on various trails around Pantiacolla Lodge. In them (and in the garden) you can see birds such as Red-throated Caracara, Spix´s Guan, Blue-throated Piping-guan, Sunbittern, Dark-billed Cuckoo, Grey-breasted Sabrewing, Festive Coquette, Great Jacamar, Chestnut-capped Puffbird, Bamboo Antshrike, Green Honeycreeper, Great Tinamou, Golden-collared Toucanet, Cream-coloured Woodpecker, Round-tailed Manakin and Band-tailed Manakin among many others. We will also do a night hike to search, for example, for the Great Potoo.
Overnight and meals at the Pantiacolla Lodge.


DAY 9.-PANTIACOLLA-ASUNCIÓN.
We leave early to travel the last stretch of boating and arrive to Atalaya where we expect the car for the transfer to Asuncion. In this route we can make some birding breaks for new birds as , Chestnut-bellied Seed-finch, Chestnut-bellied Seedeater, Magpie Tanager, Plum-throated Cotinga, Black-tailed Tityra, Black-backed Tody-flycatcher, Barred Antshrike, Tschudi´s Woodcreeper, etc... At dusk we will reach Asunción where stay overnight in cabins.



DAY 10.-ASUNCIÓN-CUSCO.
We leave up the road early, with time to pause and observe some more cloud forest birds such as Scaled Metaltail, Streak-throated Flycatcher and Southern Mountain Cacique. It is estimated to reach Cusco mid-afternoon.
