Huacarpay Lagoon

It is 30 km south of Cusco, Huacarpay Lagoon is a group of high-Andean wetlands located 3170 m above sea level. Its special location and vegetation make it an excellent place for bird watching in this place we can see acuatic birds and other characteristic of the Andean valleys and the Altiplano (highlands). This is one of the best "sites" to see the beautiful Many-colored Rush-tyrant and the endemic Bearded Montaineer.

We leave Cusco early by private car and quickly arrive at the Lagoon, is not hard to find Andean, Andean Coot, White-tufted Grebe, Many-colored Rush- tyrant, Wren-like Rushbird, Yellow-winged Blackbird, Greater Yellowlegs, Lesser Yellowlegs, Black-tailed Trainbearer, Sparkling Violetear, Plumbeous Rail and Puna Teal. Around the lagoon grows a plant of the snuff family, which attracts hummingbirds and especially the Bearded Mountainee and the Giant Hummingbird.

We can also walk in the dry areas around the lagoon where you can find more birds as the Andean Flicker, Golden-billed Saltator, Blue-and-yellow Tanager, American Kestrel, Hooded Siskin, the endemic Rusty-fronted Canastero, Band-tailed Seedeater, Black-winged Ground-dove, Spoted-winged Pigeon, Cinereus Harrier, Spot-billed Ground-tyrant, Greenish Yellow-finch and many more.
We return to Cusco at noon.
