IQUITOS AND ALLPAHUAYO-MISHANA 11 DAYS

 

This trip will take us to navigate the Amazon River and its tributaries, to observe birds in the river islands and white sand forests of Allpahuayo-Mishana, places where numerous species that can not be seen elsewhere in Peru for being endemic and / or specialists from these habitats.

Day 1.-IQUITOS – ALLPAHAYO MISHANA.
Once in Iquitos (flights from Lima) we will leave as soon as possible towards the Allpahuayo-Mishana to try to observe the birds of the white sand forest. We hope to find the Ancient Antwren, Allpahuayo Antbird, Zimmer’s Antbird, Yellow-browed Antbird, Mishana Tyrannulet, Pompadour Cotinga, Yellow-throated Flycatcher, Orange-crowned Manakin, White-crowned Manakin, Sulphur-crested Tyrant-Manakin, Cinnamon-crested Spadebill, Citron-bellied Atilla and Red-legged Honeycreeper.
We will have our lunch box and, in the evening, will return to Iquitos where we will stay in a hotel.



Day 2.-ALLPAHUAYO MISHANA.
Early in the morning we begin our second visit to Allpahuayo Mishana to travel new trails in search of specialists and endemic. To cite a few others; Yellow-throated Woodpecker, Paradise Jacamar, Brown-banded Puffbird, Iquitos Gnatcatcher and other great species like Black-headed Parrot, Golden-headed Manakin, and Fulvous-crested Tanager.
Today we will also have our lunch box and, in the evening, will return to the hotel in Iquitos.

Day 3.-IQUITOS – ACTS.
Today we leave bound for the ACTS Canopy Wallway Lodge, which is located in the Sucasari River and it's an excellent place to visit mainland ecosystems. This place has a network of bridges that cross the forest canopy allowing the observation of birds at a height of several tens of meters. One of the reasons to visit this place is that it is possible to find the Nocturnal Curassow, a very rare to be seen bird.
We will also have opportunity to find rare and valuable species such as Black-necked Red-cotinga, Black-faced Hawk, Dugand’s Antwren, Lanceolated Monklet and many more. Overnight and meals at the ACTS.


Day 4.-ACTS.
We will use this day to walk the trails and bridges. The species which can be seen include Ochre-striped Antpitta, Striated Antthrush, Red-billed Ground-cuckoo, Grey-winged Trumpeter, Band-tailed Oropendola, Sapphire-rumped Parrotlet, White-browed Purpletuft , Reddish-winged Bare-eye, Black-spotted Bare-eye, Wire-tailed Manakin, Black-throated Brilliant, Yellow-billed Jacamar and Collared Puffbird.
Overnight and meals at the ACTS.


Day 5.- ACTS –IQUITOS.
In the morning we still will have time to look at the ACTS toucans, tanagers, cotingas, carpenters, etc ... We will return to Iquitos after lunch. In this return by boat, as well as on the way out, we will have occasion to observe river environment species such as Horned Screamer, Black Caracara, King Vulture, White-throated Tucan, Riverside Tyrant, River Tyrannulet, Yellow-headed Caracara and a handful of species.
Overnight at the hotel in Iquitos.

Day 6.-IQUITOS – CUMACEBA LODGE.
Today we will navigate the Amazon River to the Cumaceba Lodge. In the itinerary we will make some stops to walk and birding on river islands in, habitat of endemic species and specialists as Red-and-white Spinetail, Brownish, Lesser Wagtail-tyrant, Black-and-white Antbird, Parker’s Spinetail, Ash-breasted Antbird and Pale-billed Hornero.
We will arrive at the lodge prior to lunch and use the afternoon to travel the trails and visit the lake to see species associated with the aquatic environment; Hoatzin, Agamy Heron, Sunbittern, American Pygmy-kingfisher, Yellow-hooded Blackbird, Black-collared Hawk.
Overnight and meals at the Cumaceba Lodge.


Day 7 CUMACEBA LODGE.
During the morning we will make a second visit to the river islands in search of Many-banded Araçari, Lettered Araçari, Ivory-billed Araçari, Festive Parrot, Amazonian Barred Woodcreeper, Long-billed Woodcreeper, Cinnamon Attila, Castelnau’s Antshrike, Hooded Tanager and many others. After lunch we will visit some of the trails where we can find Grey-headed Tanager, Scarlet-crowned Barbet, White-eared Jacamar, Varzea Schiffornis, Barred Antshrike etc...
Overnight and meals at the Cumaceba Lodge.

Day 8.-CUMACEBA LODGE – IQUITOS.
Will spend the morning on the trails of Cumaceba Lodge with chances of seeing White-winged Parakeet, Spot-breasted Woodpecker, Spotted Tody-Flycatcher, Cinereous Becard and Caqueta Seedeater.
In the afternoon we return to Iquitos. On the river you can see, Laughing Falcon, Large-billed Tern y Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture.
Overnight at a hotel in Iquitos.


Day 9.-IQUITOS-MUYUNA LODGE.
We head towards the river Yanayacu and after a 3 hour boat trip will arrive at Muyuna Lodge. On the trails we can find species such as Boat-billed Heron, Rose-fronted Parakeet, Short-tailed Parrot, Blue-necked Jacamar, Rufous-capped Nunlet, Plain-breasted Picule, Plum-throated Cotinga, Wire-tailed Manakin and Short-billed Honeycreeper.
Overnight and meals at the Muyuna Lodge.

Day 10 and 11.-MUYUNA LODGE.
During a day and half we will explore the trails of the lodge, one of the few places where you can see the rare Wattled Currasow. We also have the possibility of finding a great variety of birds, for example: Saturnine Antshrike, Gray-chested Greenlet, Rufous-headed Woodpecker, Amazonian Antshrike, Velvet-fronted Grack, Horned Screamer, Black-collared Hawk, Orange-fronted Plushcrown, Slender-billed Xenops, Zimmer's Woodcreeper, Green Ibis and five species of kingfishers. The area is home to several species of primates and two river dolphins. Overnight and meals at the Muyuna Lodge.

On the last day we return to Iquitos for our flight to Lima.
