CENTRAL ANDES AND BOSQUE UNCHOG 10 DAYS

 

Day 1: LIMA - Santa Eulalia.
Our day begins very early, we headed to the Santa Eulalia Valley, a splendid area for endemic bird watching, we can observe Great Inca-Finch, Rufous-breasted warbling-Finch, Black-necked Woodpecker, Canyon Canastero, Rusty-crowned Tit-Spinetail and, depending on the weather, we can also see Andean Condor. we will make inspections of farm fields, valleys and eucalyptus forest to observe interesting species such as Sheartail (Colibri cora), Sparkling Violet (Hummingbird sparkling), Purple-collared Woodstar (Myrtis Hummingbird), Andean Swift (Swift Andean), Pied -crested Tit-Tyrant (Cachudito crestiblanco) Trush Widow-bird (Blackbird Widow-bird), etc ...

Day 2 .- Santa Eulalia Valley - HUACHUPAMPA
Today we begin the search for the main specialties of the area, we will have chances to see White-capped Dipper, Long-tailed Mockingbird, Mourning Sierra-Finch, Cinereous Conebill, Blue-capped Tanager, Band -tailed Seedeater and Golden-bellied Saltator, just to mention a few. After breakfast we began to ascend through the different areas of the valley, making the necessary stops to see birds as Black Metaltail, Giant Hummingbird, White-winged Cinclodes and Torrent Duck. On the route we can observe the first Andean birds as Andean Tinamou, Peruvian Sierra-finch and Plumbeous Sierra-finch. We will continue up to the Huachupampa town, where we spend the night in a very basic accommodation.

Marcapomacocha Day 3. - La Oroya.
We leave Huachupampa very early to go birding in Polylepis patches that are near the road. Our main goal will be specialists in these forests, White-cheeked Cotinga, Giant Conebill, Stripe-headed Antpitta and the endemic Earthcreeper Striata. Then we continued our journey and reached the Puna area. Here the vegetation is small but is home to many interesting species as Bright-rumped Yellow-Finch, Black-breasted Hillstar, Canastero Junin, Plain Earthcreeper-breasted, etc ... Around noon we arrive at the Marcapomacocha Lagoon, around the lake you can see one of the most beautiful and rare Sandpipers the Diademed Plover. It is also the place to see the restricted White-bellied Cinclodes and other species as Andean Flicker, Puna Snipe, Gray-breasted Seedsnipe and endemic Dark-winged Miner. After this long day, we descend to La Oroya where you can relax in a comfortable hotel.


Day 4.- La Oroya, Junin Lake
Before breakfast we are looking for birds around and then we headed to Junin Lake in search of the endemic and endangered Junin Grebe, we will try to see up close from a small motorboat. In the lake, there are other typical species of high-Andean wetlands, Plumbeous Rail, Puna Plover, White-tufted Grebe, Puna Teal, Puna Ibis and Andean Gull. In the reed live the Many-colored Rush-tyrant and Wren-like Rushbird, on the banks is easy to find the Andean Negrito and the Andean Lapwing and in dry areas several types of passerines, Black-billed Shrike-tyrant, Slender-billed Miner, Peruvian Sierra-finch and several species of Ground-tyrants. Day 5 .- Huanuco - PATY TRAIL
Today, we dedicate most of the day to visit the cloud forest and the "Paty Trail", this trail is famous because you can find a lot of birds. The list of probable species is very diverse, but we will mention only a few: Beryl-spangled Tanager, Blue-winged Mountain-tanager, Hooded Mountain-tanager, Gray-breasted Mountain-toucan, Masked Saltator, Band-tailed Fruiteater and the endemics Rufous-vented Tapaculo, Antpitta Bay, Masked Fruiteater, Yellow-scarfed Tanager and Unstreaked Tit-tyrant. Night in Huanuco.

Day 6: Huanuco - Tingo Maria.
After breakfast, we headed to Tingo Maria. On route we can find Orange-eared Tanager and Golden-naped Tanager. Arrive to Tingo Maria in the afternoon, in this area we can see the first lowlands birds around the Natural Park, for example, orioles and euphonies. We will have the option to visit the so-called Cave of the Owls, the only accessible place in Peru where it is possible to see the Oilbird. The forests around the cave are a good place to look for the endemic Huallaga Tanager. Other possible species Fiery-capped Manakin, Masked Tityra, Masked Tanager, Yellow-bellied Tanager, Black-mandibled and Yellow-throated Toucan, Violaceous Trogon, Dot-winged Antwren, Lafrasnaye's Piculet, Spot-breasted Woodpecker, Yellow-breasted warbling-Antbird and many others, all amazonian species typical of lower altitudes. Day 7: Tingo Maria - Carpish TUNNEL - Huanuco
After walking around our hotel, we will return to the highlands and the cloud forest area "Carpish Tunnel" where we go back to see birds such as the Streaked Tuftedcheek, Pearle Treerunner, Powerful Woodpecker, Rufous Spinetail, Striped Treehunter, Barred Becard, Black-eared Hemispingus, Flame-faced Tanager, Grass-green Tanager, the endemic Peruvian Wren and other elusive species in our visit to the Paty Trail. We will make several stops on route and arrive to Huanuco in the afternoon.

Days 8 and 9: Forest Unchog
We left Huanuco very early, towards the famous Bosque Unchog, a remote zone where we get a long road and not always in good condition. Our goal is to locate the endemics birds in this area, some of these birds have been discovered a few years ago, Golden-backed Mountain-Tanager, Bay-vented Cotinga, Rufous-browed Hemispingus and Pardusco. There are other interesting species to add to our list; Line-fronted Canastero, Red-rumped Bush-tyrant, Large-footed Tapaculo, Ochraceous-breasted Flycatcher, Rufous Antpitta, Golden-collared Tanager, Buff-breasted Mountain-Tanager, etc ...Also we can see hummingbirds like Coppery Metaltail, Sword-billed Hummingbird, Mountain Velvetbreast and Long-tailed Sylph. The area has good variety, but the weather conditions are not always good, for that reason we will be in this place one day and a half. We spend the first night in camp, but the second day in the afternoon we returned to Huanuco.

Day 10: Huanuco - LIMA
Today, departure very early to Lima because the route is very long. However, we do a few stops in the highlands to see some birds and stretch our legs. We arrived in Lima in the afternoon / night.
