Abra Málaga

This area is one of Perú's top sites for birding due to the different ecosystems it can offer; Inter-andean Valleys, Puna Grasslans, (in its dry and humid variants), the forests of Polylepis, dwarf forests and various patches of Chusquea bamboo. This diversity makes Abra Málaga rich in endemic and specialized birds.

Day 1. - ABRA MALAGA - western slope.
We will get going very early (by van) from Cusco to Ollantaytambo. We will make some on route stops for bird sighting in places like the Huaypo Lagoon, where we will look for migratory species reaching these high Andean wetlands. Some of the different species that can be observed are the Puna Plover (Chorlitejo andino), Solitary Sandpiper, Pectoral Sandpiper, Wilson´s Phalarope, Andean Lapwing and several species of finchs. On the western slope of Abra Malaga we can observe birds like the endemyc Creamy-crested Spinetail, Chestnut-breasted Mountain-finch, White-tufted Sumbean, y Junin Canastero, among others. In the Polylepis Forest we can find the Streaked Spinetail, Giant Conebill, and in forests away from the road the Royal Cinclodes, an endangered species.
We will stop for some lunch and rest before we arrive to the passing zone which is at a 4300m altitude. By late afternoon we will return to Ollantaytambo to stop over.

Day 2.-ABRA MALAGA - eastern slope.
We will leave very early (by van) towards Abra Málaga. We will make a stop to observe birds which we missed the day before, but our objective will be to explore the high zone of the mountain and its eastern slope, where we will find new species of birds in habitats generally comprised of dwarf forest and cloud forest. In this area we can find the Sword-billed Hummingbird, el endemic Marcapata Spinetail, Stripe-headed Antpitta, Grass-green Tanager, y Violet-throated Starfrontlet, and many more.
Today we will also make a stop for our box lunch and head back to Cusco or Ollantaytambo.
